A law PhD before becoming a lawyer: asset or detour?

A law thesis before law school for lawyers: what the rules say since 2025 on CRFPA access, what it brings a firm, what it costs in years, and how to present it on a one-page CV.

By Équipe AvocatCV

Three or four years of research before the CRFPA is a bet that many second-year master’s students hesitate to make. For some, the doctorate is an academic vocation; for others, it is a way to stand out before joining a firm. You also hear that a doctor of law “goes straight to law school for lawyers”, and the rule has indeed changed recently.

This article takes stock of the current state of the law, then of what a thesis really brings in the eyes of a firm, depending on the practice area, and of what it costs in years. It ends with how to present it on a one-page CV. The texts keep changing: always check the version in force before building a career plan on them.

How law doctorate holders access the law school for lawyers

The general rule is set out by the Conseil national des barreaux on its page on the conditions of access to the profession 🔗: you become a lawyer with a master’s 2 in law or a recognised equivalent, a pass in the CRFPA entrance exam, eighteen months of initial training at a law school for lawyers, then the CAPA. Law doctorate holders benefit from a derogation: they may be exempted from the entrance exam. They are not exempted from the school training or from the CAPA.

This exemption comes from article 54 of decree no. 91-1197 of 27 November 1991 organising the legal profession, whose text is available on Légifrance. The point to remember is that it is no longer automatic for recent theses.

Thesis defended before or after 31 December 2024

According to the CNB and Légifrance, article 54 applies to doctorate holders who defended their thesis after 31 December 2024. For them, the degree alone is no longer enough: the thesis must have been defended at a French university or a university in the European Union, you must show competence in French law, and you must meet one of three routes:

  • have taught at least sixty hours of law per year for two years at a public higher-education institution, within the five years preceding the application;
  • have worked for two years as a juriste assistant or assistant de justice;
  • have worked for two years as a jurist, with a minimum annual number of hours set by the text.

Doctorate holders who defended before that date at a French university go straight into the CRFPA training without sitting the entrance exam, according to the same CNB page.

What this changes for your plan

If you are in the first year of your thesis, the activity condition is not a detail: teaching or jurist experience has to be prepared during the thesis, not afterwards. The doctoral contract, which can include teaching duties, is the natural framework for this (see the fourth part). Check the exact conditions with the CNB or the school you are aiming for, because the scheme was amended recently and is still debated within the profession.

For what follows, our article on the course of law school for lawyers describes the eighteen months that await a doctor like everyone else, and the one on preparing for the CRFPA remains useful if you choose to sit the exam.

What a thesis brings in the eyes of a firm

A firm hires an associate to handle files, rarely for a title. The thesis therefore only carries weight if it translates into visible skills.

Deep expertise. Three years on a precise question gives a command of doctrine, case law and its developments that few jurists under thirty have. In technical fields, that depth is reassuring.

A working method. Framing a piece of research, building a bibliography, ranking sources, structuring a long argument: these are exactly the moves of an in-depth legal opinion or a briefing note for a client.

Careful writing. A doctor has written hundreds of pages. Firms that write a lot (opinions, pleadings, submissions) are sensitive to this, and a publication in a legal journal bears witness to it.

A sign of perseverance. Finishing a thesis shows you can run a long project alone. It is a signal, not a guarantee.

On the other hand, a doctorate brings neither litigation practice, nor client contact, nor speed of execution. A firm will compare a twenty-nine-year-old doctor with a candidate of the same age who already has three years of practice through internships or work-study. The thesis must therefore come with professional experience, or be presented as a choice backed by a clear plan.

The practice areas where it counts most

The value of the thesis depends on the field in which you apply.

  • Public law. Firms that act in administrative litigation, public business law or EU law often value academic profiles, because the argument there is more doctrinal. Our example CV of a public law lawyer shows how a thesis fits into a career.
  • Intellectual property, tax law, banking and finance law. Technical subjects where finesse of analysis and case-law monitoring make the difference.
  • Arbitration and international law. Firms active there readily recruit profiles who have written, taught and worked in several languages.
  • Advisory firms and high-level litigation. The ability to produce a solid analysis in a short time weighs more than the title.

Conversely, in firms that handle a large volume of everyday files (family law, day-to-day criminal law, mass litigation), the thesis is less often decisive: they look first for responsiveness and client contact. That does not invalidate it, but it does not exempt you from proving your practice.

A word of caution on vocabulary: a doctor is not for that reason entitled to call themselves a “specialist” in a subject. That title is awarded by the CNB after a precise procedure, detailed in our article on the CNB specialisation mention. On your CV, write that you practise in or work in a given field.

Doctoral contract, teaching, publications

The thesis is most often prepared with a doctoral contract. According to the Ministry of Higher Education and Research 🔗, the public-law contract is concluded for an initial period of three years and may include, besides research, additional activities: teaching, promotion of research, advisory or expert missions.

For a future lawyer, these additional missions are not minor.

Teaching first, which builds at least two years of experience and may, under the conditions set out above, open the exemption from the exam. As a tutorial instructor, you also learn to explain a rule clearly, which helps in front of a client.

Publications next: articles in legal journals, case notes, commentaries, contributions to collective works. A few well-chosen publications are worth more than a long list.

Conferences and research stays finally, especially abroad, which prove ease with legal language and comparative law.

Many doctoral students also combine an internship or a job as a juriste assistant alongside. It is the best way not to reach the end of the thesis with no practice at all, and to meet the access conditions mentioned above. Our article on the article 98 pathway describes another route, reserved for jurists with long experience.

Presenting your thesis on a one-page CV

A firm reads a CV in under a minute. A thesis of several hundred pages must therefore fit into three or four lines.

Where to put it

In the “Education” section, at the top if it is recent, with the exact title, the university, the year of defence, the mention if any, and the name of the thesis supervisor if the firm knows them. Specify “defended” or “in progress”, never one for the other.

How to word it

Describe what the thesis demonstrates, not its outline. Compare:

  • before: “PhD in private law on the liability of digital platforms”;
  • after: “PhD in private law (University of …, 2026): the liability of digital platforms; analysis of French and European case law, three articles published in journals.”

The second version says which skill you bring to the firm: monitoring, analysis, writing.

Publications and teaching

Keep only two or three publications in the field of the target firm; the rest will appear on your online profile. Teaching deserves a line if it is recent: “Tutorial instructor in the law of obligations, 60 hours per year”. Do not overdo academic jargon: talk about files, clients and deadlines as soon as you have firm experience.

A single page

If the thesis and the professional experience do not fit together, firm experience comes first for an associate position; the thesis goes down to two lines. The AvocatCV generator handles the layout for you and produces a PDF that screening software reads correctly, which avoids a dense CV being discarded before being read. For what comes next, our article on the CV for a first associate position shows how to balance education and practice.

Frequently asked questions

Can a doctor of law become a lawyer without law school?

No. The exemption concerns the CRFPA entrance exam, not the eighteen-month training or the CAPA. Another route, article 98 of the 1991 decree, exists for some experienced jurists, but it follows other conditions.

Do you need a PhD to work in a large firm?

No. The thesis is an asset in some practice areas, not a hiring condition. Firms also recruit on the quality of internships, command of English and motivation.

My thesis is already defended: which rules apply?

It depends on the date of defence (before or after 31 December 2024) and on your background. Consult the CNB page on access conditions and, if needed, the law school where you enrol.

Does a thesis in progress justify a longer CV?

No. One page is enough: the thesis fits in a few lines, and the most relevant publications are cited without an exhaustive list.

Can you call yourself a specialist in the subject of your thesis?

Not without a specialisation mention awarded by the CNB. Write instead that you practise in or work in that field, and that you devoted your doctorate to the subject.
